Van Side Benches Under $100
Simple Benches
Total Cost: under $100
Total Time to Build: 1-2 hours
Keep it simple with a pair of side benches for your van that can be easily set up and secured in just one minute. Just a set of two or more storage containers with 3/4 inch (9mm) plywood strapped with tie-down straps. Similarly when you need the full space of the van, you can easily release the straps and take them out.
Things you'll need:
Plywood - match the size to what you need. I bought one piece and asked the hardware store staff to cut it in half lengthwise for me. I then rounded the edges with a jigsaw and drilled out 4 holes for the straps to pass through. I also cut out port holes at each end of each plywood piece (set the jigsaw to cut on a 45% angle so the lid doesn't fall through). When I place a central panel and lay a mattress on top, I can just lift the mattress, lift the port hole lid and grab whatever I need from any of the containers without having to climb underneath.
2 or more tough storage containers - I used 4 containers with wide openings on the side for easier access; and
4 tie-down straps - I used straps roughly 3 feet in length (1m);
That's it! Let me know in the comments if I missed anything.
